नामे (Nouns)

एमपीएससीच्या पेपरातील नामावरील जवळपास प्रत्येक प्रश्न प्रत्यक्षात वचनाचा प्रश्न असतो: हे नाम मोजता येते का, आणि त्याचे अनेकवचन होते का?

चार प्रकार विचारले जातात:

1. अगणनीय नामे. information, advice, furniture, luggage, machinery, poetry, scenery, equipment, work, bread यांचे अनेकवचन होत नाही आणि त्यांच्यापूर्वी "a" येत नाही. ती मोजण्यासाठी मापाचा शब्द वापरा: a piece of advice, two items of furniture.
2. अनेकवचनी दिसणारी पण एकवचनी नामे. news, mathematics, physics, politics, economics, innings, measles यांना एकवचनी क्रियापद लागते: "The news is good."
3. नेहमी अनेकवचनी असणारी नामे. scissors, trousers, spectacles, goods, premises, alms, surroundings यांना अनेकवचनी क्रियापद लागते: "The scissors are sharp."
4. संयुक्त नामे व षष्ठी. मुख्य शब्दाचे अनेकवचन करा: mothers-in-law, passers-by, commanders-in-chief. आधीच s ने संपणाऱ्या अनेकवचनाला फक्त अवतरणचिन्ह लागते: the boys' hostel.

सर्वात सामान्य चूक म्हणजे अगणनीय नामाचे अनेकवचन करणे — "many informations", "two advices", "all the furnitures". मराठीत "माहिती" व "सल्ला" सहज मोजता येतात, म्हणून अनेकवचन स्वाभाविक वाटते. ओळखण्याची युक्ती: नामापुढे "one" ठेवून पाहा. "One information" असे म्हणता येत नाही, म्हणून "informations" हेही चूक; आणि तिथे many ऐवजी much किंवा a lot of वापरावे लागते.

अगणनीय (information, advice, furniture, luggage, equipment) → अनेकवचन नाही, "a" नाही, much वापरा · news/mathematics/politics → एकवचनी क्रियापद · scissors/trousers/goods → अनेकवचनी क्रियापद · संयुक्त नामात मुख्य शब्दाचे अनेकवचन (mothers-in-law)

चूक ओळखा: "He gave me many useful informations about the recruitment." → informations ही चूक आहे. "Information" हे अगणनीय असल्याने त्याचे अनेकवचन होत नाही आणि त्याला many नव्हे तर much लागते: "He gave me much useful information about the recruitment." पडताळणी: "one information" असे म्हणता येत नाही, म्हणून अनेकवचनही असू शकत नाही. मोजायचेच असेल तर "many useful pieces of information" असे लिहा.
