शब्दयोगी अव्यये (Prepositions)

Preposition अर्थावरून निवडले जात नाही; ते आधी येणाऱ्या शब्दावरून ठरते. भाषांतर पाठ करू नका, जोड्या पाठ करा.

पेपरात चार प्रकार येतात:

1. काळ. घड्याळाच्या वेळेला at (at 5 p.m.), वार किंवा तारखेला on (on Monday, on 3 May), महिना, वर्ष किंवा मोठ्या कालखंडाला in (in June, in 2019, in the morning). लहानाकडून मोठ्याकडे: at → on → in.
2. स्थळ. एका बिंदूसाठी at (at the gate), पृष्ठभागासाठी on (on the wall), बंदिस्त जागेसाठी in (in the hall).
3. क्रियापद + preposition, ठरलेले. depend on, insist on, listen to, look after, consist of, deal with; जागेसाठी अर्ज करताना apply for, अधिकाऱ्याकडे अर्ज करताना apply to.
4. विशेषण किंवा नाम + preposition, ठरलेले. afraid of, good at, capable of, व्यक्तीवर रागावणे म्हणजे angry with, वस्तूवर रागावणे म्हणजे angry at, the reason for, an answer to.

मराठी किंवा हिंदी भाषकाची सर्वात सामान्य चूक म्हणजे जिथे इंग्रजीला preposition नकोच तिथे ते घालणे. मराठीत संबंध शब्दयोगी अव्ययातून येतो — "चर्चा" ही नेहमी कशाबद्दल असते — त्यामुळे हात आपोआप "discuss about" लिहितो. पुढील क्रियापदे कर्म थेट घेतात, मध्ये काहीही येत नाही: discuss, describe, enter, marry, resemble, reach, order, comprise, accompany, attack, mention, request, investigate. ओळखण्याची युक्ती: preposition काढून टाकल्यावरही वाक्याचा अर्थ तोच राहत असेल, तर ते काढून टाका.

याच्या उलट चूक म्हणजे मराठीतून उचललेले preposition: "त्याच्यावर रागावला" यावरून angry on him असे न लिहिता angry with him लिहा; तसेच different than नव्हे, different from.

बिंदू at → पृष्ठभाग/वार on → बंदिस्त जागा/महिना in · ठरलेल्या जोड्या: depend on, listen to, good at, afraid of, angry with (व्यक्ती) · discuss, describe, enter, marry, resemble, reach, order, request यांच्यानंतर preposition नाही

रिकामी जागा भरा: "The committee will discuss ____ the new policy tomorrow." पर्याय: about / on / over / preposition नाही. → Preposition नाही: "The committee will discuss the new policy tomorrow." पडताळणी: ज्याला preposition लागतेच असे क्रियापद घालून पाहा — "talk about the new policy" हे बरोबर आहे, आणि म्हणूनच "discuss" लाही "about" लागते असे वाटते. प्रत्यक्षात लागत नाही; "about" हा अर्थ "discuss" मध्येच सामावलेला आहे.
